To Lam conducts historic state visit to Russia to strengthen strategic ties

Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam is conducting a state visit to Russia from September 7 to 9, 2026, at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin. This visit marks the first state visit to Russia by a Vietnamese Party and State leader since 1991.

During the visit in Moscow, To Lam met with Gennady Zyuganov, Chairman of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, to discuss deepening inter-party ties and high-level exchanges. He also met with representatives of the Russian Veterans Association and the Russia-Vietnam Friendship Association, expressing gratitude for the historical support provided by the Soviet Union and Russia to Vietnam.

To Lam engaged with the Vietnamese community and embassy staff in Russia, encouraging Vietnamese entrepreneurs to serve as a bridge for bilateral cooperation. Discussions also covered maritime cooperation, with meetings involving the Russian Presidential Assistant and the Chairman of the Russian Maritime Council to explore shipping routes and port infrastructure development.

Scientific and technological cooperation remains a cornerstone of the relationship, with long-standing ties between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and Russian scientific institutions. Both nations aim to expand collaboration in energy, oil, gas, defense, security, and peaceful nuclear energy to elevate their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
