Vietnam reports 1.4 million youth are NEET
Vietnam faces a significant challenge with 1.4 million young people categorized as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). According to data from the first two quarters of 2026, the unemployment rate for youth aged 15 to 24 reached 8.67%, which is nearly four times the general unemployment rate for the working-age population.
Beyond unemployment, the quality of existing jobs remains a concern. In 2024, 57.5% of youth employment was classified as informal, while only 41.4% of young workers participated in social insurance. This indicates that many young laborers work in roles lacking necessary protections, skill development opportunities, and career growth potential.
These issues were discussed at a workshop in Hanoi organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) Vietnam office and the Academy of Journalism and Communication. Experts highlighted that digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and green transitions are rapidly shifting labor market demands, requiring youth to possess higher adaptability and productivity.
