Vietnam residents build flood-prevention lofts after historic floods
Following historic flooding in late 2025, residents in Vietnam's Khanh Hoa and Dak Lak provinces are proactively implementing disaster preparedness measures to mitigate future risks.
In Khanh Hoa, many households are constructing elevated lofts within their homes to serve as safe spaces for families and storage for assets. These structures are being built higher than the peak water levels recorded during previous floods. For example, in Dien Lac commune, residents are investing between 6 million and 30 million VND to build these lofts, which range from 20 to 50 square meters.
Similarly, in the flood-prone areas of Dak Lak, including Hoa Thinh and Dong Xuan communes, residents are reinforcing homes and preparing essential supplies. Families are stockpiling food and necessities to last up to 10 days in case of isolation. Some residents have also adjusted their livelihoods, such as switching from cattle to poultry to ensure animals can be moved more easily during emergencies. Local authorities are also investing in community infrastructure and emergency facilities to support vulnerable riverside populations.
