Vietnam addresses rapid population ageing and elderly rights

Vietnam is facing rapid population ageing, with the number of people aged 60 and over projected to reach approximately 18 million by 2030. This demographic shift is prompting a transition in national policy from providing basic assistance to ensuring the rights, health, and independence of older persons.

At a recent conference organized by the Ministry of Health and the United Nations Population Fund, officials emphasized the need to update the Law on the Elderly to address modern needs. Key objectives include moving from passive treatment to proactive prevention, including mandatory annual health screenings and management starting in 2026.

On an international level, Vietnam hosted a discussion at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva to promote the right to healthcare for older persons. The event highlighted global challenges, noting that the worldwide population aged 60 and above is expected to exceed 2 billion by 2050, necessitating more comprehensive legal frameworks to protect their dignity and well-being.
