Vietnam: Rising life expectancy drives trend toward independent retirement

As average life expectancy in Vietnam is projected to rise from 65.5 years in 1993 to 74.7 years by 2025, there is a growing trend toward independent and self-sufficient retirement.

According to the Manulife Asia Care 2026 survey, 89% of Vietnamese respondents prioritize financial independence in old age, viewing it as a legacy for their families. Furthermore, 57% expressed a desire to avoid becoming a burden to their relatives, while only 21% expect financial support from their children. This marks a significant shift away from the traditional Southeast Asian mindset of relying on children for support in later life.

Experts suggest that early preparation—starting as early as age 40, as proposed by the Ministry of Health—is essential for managing longer retirement periods. Proactive planning in health and finance allows individuals to maintain quality of life and exercise autonomy in healthcare and lifestyle choices.
