Vietnam rolls out online replacement process for new biometric National ID cards

The Vietnamese government is urging citizens to replace lost, damaged or expired National ID cards (CCCD) that now embed an electronic chip and biometric data such as fingerprints and iris scans. The upgraded cards can store additional personal records, including health insurance, tax numbers and driver licences, and are intended to streamline public‑service transactions and support digital identification in emergencies.

Applicants can request a replacement through the VNeID mobile application by selecting the appropriate procedure, confirming personal details and paying the required fee. After submission, police authorities schedule an appointment for photo capture and biometric enrolment, and the new card can be collected in‑person or delivered via public postal services. Authorities advise users to verify their information carefully before finalising the request.

The move aims to strengthen document security, reduce fraud, and facilitate faster online access to government services, with future plans to link the ID card to international travel arrangements where agreements allow.
