India Opens Market to Vietnamese Fresh Durian
The Government of India has amended its plant‑quarantine regulations for the fifth time in 2026, adding Vietnam to the list of countries permitted to export fresh durian for consumption. The amendment, notified in Notification S.O. 3828(E) and published on 13 July 2026, imposes no special import conditions and does not require additional phytosanitary certificates beyond the standard certification.
The change opens a market of more than 1.4 billion consumers to Vietnamese durian exporters. Officials expect initial sales to be concentrated in major Indian cities through premium retail chains, high‑end restaurants, hotels and e‑commerce platforms. The move is described as the outcome of technical cooperation between the plant‑protection agencies of India and Vietnam and is seen as a significant opportunity for Vietnam’s multi‑billion‑dollar durian sector.
