Vietnam seeks UNESCO recognition for Binh Dinh martial arts

Vietnam is finalizing a dossier to propose the traditional martial arts of Binh Dinh for inscription on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The initiative, led by the Gia Lai provincial authorities, seeks to preserve and promote the historical and artistic value of these combat styles, which are considered foundational to Vietnamese martial arts history.

Vietnam plans to defend the candidacy during the Intergovernmental Committee meeting for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, scheduled to take place in China in late 2026.

In addition to seeking international recognition, Gia Lai has approved a conservation and promotion plan for the 2026–2030 period. This program includes support policies for martial arts masters, practitioners, and schools to ensure the transmission of techniques to younger generations. The province also aims to integrate these traditions into local educational programs to foster physical fitness and regional cultural identity.
