Vietnam protests US 12.5% tariff under Section 301 over forced‑labour allegations

The U.S. Trade Representative announced new tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on imports from 60 economies, including Vietnam, alleging insufficient enforcement of bans on goods produced with forced labour. Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said the decision “does not fully reflect the reality and Vietnam’s efforts” to prevent, reduce and eliminate forced labour. She noted that Vietnam strictly prohibits all forms of forced labour, complies with International Labour Organization conventions and has issued Decree No. 292/2026 banning the import of products made wholly or partly with forced labour.

Vietnam pledged to continue constructive dialogue with the United States and urged Washington to reassess the tariff rates based on the concrete measures Vietnam has taken. The tariff action follows a Section 301 investigation launched on 29 May 2026 concerning intellectual‑property rights protection.

High‑level diplomatic contacts have also taken place, including a message from Vietnamese President‑General To Lam to U.S. President Donald Trump conveyed by Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung, and discussions with U.S. officials aimed at easing trade tensions while maintaining the strategic partnership.
