Black Sea maritime risks drive up global wheat prices
Increased maritime risks in the Black Sea are driving up global wheat prices. Following threats to grain vessels near Odessa and a Turkish-owned ship off Romania, transport risks have reached critical levels. Consequently, Russia and Ukraine's combined wheat exports for September 2026 dropped by 80% compared to previous years.
On the Chicago Board of Trade, December 2026 wheat futures rose 1.4% to 254.4 USD per ton. In response to supply tightening, Saudi Arabia's General Food Security Authority (GFSA) purchased 683,000 tons of wheat at an average price of 339.2 USD per ton, exceeding its initial tender plan.
Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova has called for a memorandum among Black Sea nations to ensure free and safe navigation, warning that disruptions to grain shipments could trigger migration waves from Africa. Additionally, insurance companies are reportedly struggling to provide coverage for cargo passing through the region due to the heightened security environment.
