Vietnam small gasoline car sales drop significantly

The Vietnamese market for affordable gasoline-powered small cars has experienced a significant downturn. In August 2026, sales for the segment including the Hyundai Grand i10, Toyota Wigo, and Kia Morning dropped by nearly 50% compared to the previous month.

Data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) and Hyundai Thanh Cong Vietnam (HTV) indicates that total sales for these small gasoline vehicles reached only 167 units in August, a 46.4% decrease from July 2026 and a 52.4% decline compared to the same period last year. This period of low demand is partly attributed to the influence of the ‘Hungry Ghost Month’ (the seventh lunar month).

While the Hyundai Grand i10 remains the best-selling model in this segment, its monthly sales fell below 100 units in September for the first time this year. The Toyota Wigo also faced challenges, recording 76 deliveries in August. Consumer preferences appear to be shifting, with the Grand i10 moving from a primary choice for service drivers to a budget-friendly option for first-time family owners.
