Vietnam splits Ninh Thuan nuclear power project into three independent components

Vietnam's National Assembly has approved a resolution to restructure the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project by splitting it into three independent components. This move aims to establish a legal framework that allows each project to proceed without mutual dependency.

The first component, Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Plant 1, will be led by Vietnam Electricity (EVN) in partnership with Russia's Rosatom. This project will utilize VVER-1200 reactor technology under an intergovernmental agreement signed in March 2026.

The second component, Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Plant 2, will be led by Petrovietnam. This project involves cooperation with South Korea's KEPCO, following a Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2026.

The third component focuses on compensation, support, and resettlement, to be managed by the Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee to facilitate infrastructure and site clearance. Each nuclear plant is expected to have a capacity between 2,000 and 3,200 MW, with an operational target between 2031 and 2035.
