Vietnam stock market upgraded to secondary emerging market status by FTSE Russell

Vietnam's stock market has officially transitioned from a frontier market to a secondary emerging market following an upgrade by FTSE Russell, effective September 21, 2026. This milestone is expected to facilitate significant foreign capital inflows through a four-stage allocation process.

According to SSI Securities, initial net buying from FTSE index-tracking funds reached approximately 240.49 million USD on September 18. While the upgrade directly impacts large-cap listed stocks, it is also expected to benefit the startup ecosystem by providing clearer exit routes for venture capital and increasing market transparency.

VinaCapital reports that Vietnam's market valuations remain attractive compared to its ASEAN peers. Projections for 2026 indicate that Vietnam will lead the comparison group with an earnings per share (EPS) growth of 42.3% and a return on equity (ROE) of 15.0%. Despite these strong fundamentals, the market's P/E ratio sits at a mid-range level relative to neighbors like Thailand and Malaysia.
