Vietnam targets English as a second language in vocational education
Vietnam is working toward a roadmap to establish English as a second language in vocational education, with the Ministry of Education and Training setting tasks for the 2026-2027 school year to innovate enrollment and training programs. However, experts note significant bottlenecks in vocational schools. One instructor reported that 50-60% of students lack a basic foundation or face psychological barriers, while only 10-15% possess high proficiency and confidence in professional communication.
Discussions regarding English education also highlight the debate over using IELTS certificates for bonus points in admissions. Experts suggest the focus should shift toward ensuring equitable access to language learning. In Ho Chi Minh City, there are notable disparities in how English is introduced at the preschool level and the availability of qualified teachers across different districts and school types. To address this, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has begun reviewing the English proficiency of non-English teaching staff to identify training needs.
