Vietnam's Ministry of Health has released a draft plan aiming to restore a natural sex ratio at birth by 2035. The proposal seeks to reduce the current imbalance to below 109 boys per 100 girls by 2030, eventually reaching a natural level of approximately 106 boys per 100 girls by 2035.

To achieve these targets, the government proposes stricter enforcement of laws against fetal sex selection, increased inspections of medical facilities, and enhanced monitoring of online advertisements for sex-selection services. Public awareness campaigns will also be implemented to challenge the long-standing cultural preference for sons.

The Ministry attributes the skewed ratio to several factors, including the pressure to produce male heirs, shrinking family sizes, and easier access to prenatal sex-identification technologies. The draft warns that a persistent surplus of men could lead to significant social and demographic challenges, such as increased gender inequality, difficulties in the marriage market, gender-based violence, and human trafficking.
