Vietnam Enforces New Child Car Seat Rules Starting July 2026

From 1 July 2026 Vietnam’s Road Traffic Safety Law requires that children under 10 years of age and shorter than 1.35 m be secured with an appropriate child‑car‑seat and may not sit in the front row, except in single‑row vehicles. The regulations apply to all private cars; passenger‑transport vehicles are exempt. Enforcement begins on 15 August 2026 – a warning is issued for lack of a child seat, while allowing a child to sit in the front seat can be fined between 800,000 and 1,000,000 VND.

A widely shared video shows a baby in a properly installed seat being jolted forward during an abrupt brake, yet remaining securely restrained, illustrating the seat’s protective role. Safety agencies in the United States cite reductions of 71 %–82 % in injury risk when children use proper seats, underscoring the global relevance of the measure.
