Vietnam to add overtaking and lane-changing tasks to driver exams

Starting March 1, 2027, Vietnam will implement new requirements for automobile driver's license examinations. According to Circular 108/2026 issued by the Ministry of Public Security, the practical road test will be expanded to include 12 specific tasks.

Two new distinct components will be added to the assessment: accelerating to overtake a vehicle and accelerating to change lanes. These additions are designed to evaluate a driver's ability to observe traffic, judge distances and speeds, use signaling correctly, and manage real-world driving situations safely.

For the overtaking task, candidates must demonstrate proper signaling, safety checks, and the ability to return to their original lane after passing. The Traffic Police Department noted that the new structure aims to ensure drivers can effectively apply traffic rules and handle complex maneuvers in actual traffic conditions.
