VNeID expands digital services in Vietnam for healthcare and social security
Vietnam is significantly expanding the utility of its VNeID digital identity application through several new regulatory and technical updates.
In the healthcare sector, over 1,210 hospitals have implemented electronic medical records (EMR), though experts emphasize the need for better data standardization and connectivity to fully leverage AI. Simultaneously, the VssID application has been upgraded to include electronic social insurance books and health insurance cards, allowing citizens to track insurance information digitally.
Regarding social welfare, Decree 320/2026/ND-CP enables citizens to receive pensions and social security benefits directly through a dedicated account linked to VNeID. Furthermore, from July 2026, certain identity card re-issuances can be completed entirely online. To encourage digital adoption, citizens with level 2 VNeID accounts may receive fee exemptions for various administrative procedures through February 2027.
Security and connectivity are also key focuses. VNeID accounts will automatically lock if the registered mobile number is no longer owned by the user. On an international level, Vietnam plans to connect VNeID with the electronic identification systems of Singapore and Laos starting in 2026 to streamline border crossings. Additionally, the application is expanding into the financial sector, allowing users to use verified data to open securities accounts more efficiently.
