Vietnam to connect VNeID with ASEAN digital ID systems
Vietnam has launched a plan to connect its national digital identity application, VNeID, with the electronic identification systems of ASEAN member states. The initiative will initially pilot connections with Singapore and Laos, with the goal of eventually expanding to other countries in the region.
Under Decision No. 1830/QD-TTg, signed by Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung, the project aims to simplify immigration procedures by reducing redundant declarations and the need for physical documents. The system is intended to shorten verification times at border gates, saving time and costs for travelers through cross-border data authentication.
Pilot programs for cross-border electronic identity exchange will be conducted at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi and Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City. These pilots will focus on ensuring security, data protection, and legal compliance. Following the pilot phase, authorities will evaluate system stability and compatibility to establish technical standards for wider deployment across ASEAN border gates.
To facilitate this, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Science and Technology are tasked with coordinating with Singapore and Laos to integrate VNeID with Singpass and LAeID, respectively.
