Vietnam to shut down 2G mobile services by September 2026

Vietnam is scheduled to officially discontinue 2G mobile service nationwide on September 15, 2026, marking the end of over 30 years of use for the technology. This transition aims to free up frequency bands for more efficient use and promote the development of digital services through 4G and 5G networks.

Mobile operators have already begun the gradual decommissioning of 2G base stations in certain areas. Experts warn that some users may experience service disruptions before the final deadline if their devices are not compatible with newer standards. Notably, some 4G smartphones—particularly older models, imported handsets, or those not officially distributed in Vietnam—may lose the ability to make or receive calls if they do not support Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology.

To avoid losing connectivity, users are encouraged to check if their devices and SIM cards are compatible with VoLTE. Many citizens have already begun visiting service provider locations to verify whether they need to replace their handsets or simply update their SIM cards and activate VoLTE features.
