Vietnam to shut down all 2G mobile networks by September 2026

Vietnam's telecommunications companies are scheduled to officially shut down all 2G mobile networks nationwide starting September 15, 2026. According to the Radio Frequency Authority under the Ministry of Science and Technology, all 2G base transceiver stations (BTS 2G) will cease operations on this date.

Users with mobile devices that do not support VoLTE or SIM cards that do not support 4G/5G technology will lose the ability to make voice calls and send SMS messages once the shutdown is complete. The transition aims to optimize radio frequency resources, accelerate the shift to 4G and 5G technologies, improve service quality, and support national digital transformation.

While the shutdown follows a global trend of infrastructure modernization, 2G networks will be maintained in specific strategic areas, including the Spratly Islands, Paracel Islands, and DK oil rigs, to ensure national defense and continuous communication.
