Vietnam university admission reforms spark debate over notice periods

Discussions regarding university admission reforms in Vietnam have raised questions about the necessity of a three-year advance notice period for policy changes. While a three-year window is intended to protect students, debate exists over whether all changes require a full high school cycle to prepare.

Changes to the systemic curriculum, which might force students to study subjects they did not select in grade 10, may justify a long notice period. However, adjustments to assessment methods or scoring formulas do not necessarily require students to relearn content if the core subject requirements remain the same.

Regarding the potential removal of IELTS bonus points, it is noted that while the bonus points may be eliminated, the English proficiency gained remains a valuable asset for higher education and future employment. The Ministry of Education and Training is responsible for issuing general regulations and oversight, while universities must define and explain prerequisite subjects and specific competencies.
