Vietnam updates conservation plans for Phong Nha - Ke Bang and Son La Prison
Vietnam is advancing conservation and sustainable development efforts for several key heritage sites. At a conference in Quang Tri, officials and UNESCO representatives discussed the expansion of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) network. Phong Nha - Ke Bang has been recognized as Vietnam's 12th World Biosphere Reserve, highlighting its diverse ecosystems, cave systems, and cultural importance.
In Son La province, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has issued a decision to adjust the planning for the Son La Prison Special National Monument. The revised 32.3-hectare plan aims to preserve the original structure of the site while addressing land and public asset issues at the Khau Ca hill area.
The updated plan for the prison site includes the creation of a 4.05-hectare Khau Ca Memory Park and the conversion of existing buildings into museums and libraries to support cultural tourism. The project, spanning the period from 2026 to 2035, also includes a proposal to relocate approximately 24 households near the Khau Ca road to ensure synchronized infrastructure and compliance with legal regulations.
