Vietnam warns firms of expanding Canadian trade‑defence measures

Canada has imposed a temporary 25% anti‑dumping surcharge on imported wooden cabinets and washbasins. The Vietnamese Trade Office in Canada cautions that this action signals a broader shift toward more trade‑defence tools, including a possible quota‑like measure on extruded aluminium.

Trade Counsellor Tran Thu Quynh noted that Canada, which previously used such measures sparingly, is now extending scrutiny from traditional sectors like steel to furniture and aluminium as imports rise. Vietnam is the fourth‑largest supplier of HS‑94 furniture to Canada, with 2025 exports valued at about US$725 million – an 8% market share. Vietnamese exporters are urged to prepare for further restrictions before formal decisions are made.
