Hanoi ranks third globally in air pollution levels
Hanoi experienced a significant decline in air quality on the morning of October 26, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 172. This measurement placed the capital third among the world's most polluted cities, according to data from IQAir.
Various monitoring stations across the city recorded hazardous levels. In the Tay Ho district, the AQI exceeded 200, while other areas such as Lo Duc and Phu Thuong reported levels between 181 and 198. Experts attribute the poor air quality to dry weather, weak winds, and temperature inversion, which prevent pollutants from dispersing.
The Hanoi People's Committee has issued a plan to strengthen emission controls and proactively respond to pollution risks. The Department of Natural Resources and Environment will serve as the technical lead, providing warnings 5 to 7 days in advance and coordinating with local authorities to monitor construction sites and street cleaning activities.
