Vietnam youth face career shifts due to skill mismatches

Young workers in Vietnam are increasingly facing the need to retrain or change career paths due to a mismatch between academic degrees and practical market demands. Some graduates, such as those in marketing, find themselves working in the gig economy to sustain themselves while pursuing more technical vocational training in fields like electricity to secure stable industrial employment.

Experts suggest that the rise of artificial intelligence is further complicating the landscape, requiring workers to constantly update their technical skills. Dr. Le Viet Khuyen, former Deputy Director of the Higher Education Department, emphasizes that educational institutions must proactively survey market needs and adjust curricula to avoid teaching obsolete subjects, rather than simply maintaining programs to attract enrollment.
