Vietnamese author Nam Cao's short story collection lauded by Chinese readers

In 2021 Chinese publisher Ngôn Thực released a Chinese-language anthology "南高小说选" (Nam Cao Short Story Collection), translating 15 of the Vietnamese writer Nam Cao’s classic pre‑1945 short stories such as "Chí Phèo", "Lão Hạc", "Đôi Mắt" and "Một Bữa No", plus excerpts from his wartime diary.

On Douban, one of China’s largest book‑review platforms, the anthology has earned an 8.2/10 rating after five years. A reviewer wrote, “I read it and forgot the author was foreign because everything feels so genuine and thought‑provoking.” Other comments praised Nam Cao’s powerful narrative style, vivid dialogue, restrained depiction of the lower classes and poetic language.
