Vietnamese chess masters Nguyễn Thành Bảo and Thái Hữu Quảng excel at Da Nang tournament

At the Vietnam‑Guangdong International Friendly Chess tournament in Da Nang, Vietnam's team delivered standout performances. veteran Nguyễn Thành Bảo, 48, secured four victories in his first five rounds, defeating Chinese masters Lương Vận Long, Trâu Hải Đào, Hoàng Văn Tuấn and top‑ranked Trần Vũ Kỳ. His wins helped the Vietnamese side clinch a narrow 11‑9 lead in the first round and later narrow the overall score to 2‑3 after a series of setbacks.

Meanwhile, Thái Hữu Quảng, known as “Kim Mã Xa,” drew three consecutive games against world champion Lại Lý Huynh. The unlikely three‑match encounter resulted from random pairings in the team format, and Quảng’s ability to hold the champion to three draws was highlighted as a testament to the strength of the so‑called “Guangdong ten‑tigers” group of Chinese players.

Both players’ results contributed to Vietnam’s competitive showing against the Chinese contingent, underscoring the depth of talent in Vietnamese Xiangqi.
