Vietnamese cinema expands into historical action for 2027-2028 Tet seasons

Vietnamese cinema is expanding its focus on historical and action genres with two major projects slated for the Lunar New Year (Tet) seasons of 2027 and 2028.

Directed by Dương Minh Chiến, “Loạn thế: Nghĩa khí anh hùng” is scheduled for release during the 2027 Tet holiday. The film features a wuxia and action style, starring Trần Thiên Tú, Ma Ran Đô, Trầm Minh Hoàng, Quốc Anh, and Yến My. It is expected to compete with other major releases such as “Em” by Trấn Thành and “Thám tử Kiên: Lời nguyền hoàng kim” by Victor Vũ.

Directed by Đinh Tuấn Vũ, “Nữ binh” is set for the 2028 Tet season. The film draws inspiration from the anti-French spirit of King Thành Thái and legends of a secret female guard within the imperial palace during the Nguyễn Dynasty. Rather than focusing on idealized heroes, the story follows ordinary women caught in historical upheavals, emphasizing character depth, psychological growth, and realistic combat over fantasy elements. The production team is currently casting 20 female actors to form the core fighting force.
