Vietnam Embassy in U.S. advances search for fallen soldiers' remains

The Vietnamese Embassy in the United States is prioritizing the search, recovery, and identification of the remains of fallen Vietnamese soldiers as part of ongoing efforts to address the consequences of the Vietnam War. Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung stated that cooperation to locate missing personnel from both sides is a fundamental pillar of Vietnam-US relations, serving a humanitarian purpose and promoting reconciliation.

Under the 2021 Vietnam Wartime Accounting Initiative (VWAI) memorandum of understanding, the United States provided 46 sets of documents to Vietnam by the end of fiscal year 2025, 45 of which have been verified. In the first half of 2026, Texas Tech University facilitated the transfer of 600 pages of documents and 50 selected files. These were processed from over 200 digitized records concerning approximately 1,500 Vietnamese military personnel held in U.S. archives. Additionally, the U.S. has returned more than 40 war artifacts to Vietnam.
