Vietnamese ethnic minorities face hardship in illegal residence in Thailand

More than 1,300 Vietnamese ethnic minorities are currently residing illegally in Thailand. Most of these individuals left Vietnam via unofficial border crossings, often through the Vietnam-Cambodia border, driven by economic motives or deceptive promises from organizations regarding employment and resettlement in third countries.

Living conditions for these individuals are precarious. They often reside in cramped, highly monitored rental rooms in densely populated areas. Due to their lack of legal documentation, they face significant challenges, including unstable manual labor income, limited access to healthcare and education for their children, and constant fear of raids by the Royal Thai Police. While some have sought protection through the UNHCR and applied for refugee status, many remain in a state of legal limbo.

Vietnamese authorities are working to encourage voluntary repatriation. Challenges to returning include fear of legal repercussions for past violations and concerns regarding the loss of land or housing in their home communities. Efforts are being made to provide support for reintegration and to stabilize livelihoods for those who choose to return.
