Vietnamese households do not have any legal requirement dictating what must be said when incense is offered, but many elders guide younger generations on suitable language at the altar. They commonly advise avoiding harsh or argumentative remarks, refraining from joking or overly casual comments, and steering clear of transactional prayers that seek material gain in exchange for offerings.

When it comes to the time of day, there is no official prescribed hour, but many families prefer the morning. After cleaning the altar and preparing fresh water, lighting incense before starting daily activities is seen as a respectful way to honor ancestors. On special occasions such as the first day of the lunar month, full moon, or death anniversaries, incense is often lit before meals, though regional variations exist. Cultural experts stress that sincerity and reverence matter more than selecting a specific "lucky" hour.
