Vietnamese film ‘Nghỉ hè sợ nghỉ hưu’ tops local box office
The Vietnamese film market is seeing a shift in dominance as the domestic production ‘Nghỉ hè sợ nghỉ hưu’ (Fear of Retirement During Summer Break) has overtaken international blockbusters at the box office.
Directed by Huỳnh Lập, the film earned over 3 billion VND on August 15 from approximately 32,341 tickets. Including pre-sales and special screenings, its total revenue has reached over 10 billion VND. The film, which explores themes of family and generational gaps through a mix of comedy and spiritual elements, is scheduled for a nationwide release on August 21.
This performance has ended the recent streak of foreign film dominance. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ moved to second place, earning nearly 2.4 billion VND on the same day, bringing its total Vietnamese revenue to over 186.3 billion VND. Other notable performers in the rankings include ‘PAW Patrol: Phim khủng long’ and Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’.
