Vietnamese Museum Australia opens in Sunshine
The Vietnamese Museum Australia (VMA) has officially opened in Sunshine, Brimbank, marking the first institution of its kind in the country. The museum is dedicated to preserving the history, traditions, and experiences of the more than 350,000 Australians of Vietnamese origin, including the stories of those who arrived as refugees.
The project was funded by $9.7 million from the Australian Government via the Investing in Our Communities Program, $8.6 million from the Victorian Government, and additional community fundraising. The opening ceremony was attended by Museum CEO Tammy Nguyen, Victorian Premier Ben Carroll, Federal Member for Fraser Daniel Mulino, and Brimbank Mayor Virginia Tachos.
In conjunction with the museum, the Brimbank City Council opened Wominjeka Plaza. This new public space serves as a forecourt to the museum and was developed with input from the Wurundjeri Council to honor Traditional Owners and celebrate the region's multicultural and refugee communities.
