Vietnam observes Vu Lan Festival and Lunar July 15 traditions

The Vu Lan Festival and the 15th day of the seventh lunar month are significant cultural and religious observances in Vietnam. While often used interchangeably, they represent different concepts: the 15th day is a lunar milestone involving various folk and religious activities, whereas Vu Lan is a specific Buddhist festival centered on filial piety and honoring parents and ancestors.

Across Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City, pagodas such as Vinh Nghiem and An Lac are seeing large crowds of Buddhists participating in rituals like the ‘Rose on the Chest’ ceremony. This tradition uses colored roses to symbolize the presence or loss of parents. In other regions, such as Gia Lai and Ha Tinh, communities engage in tea ceremonies and folk music festivals to preserve cultural heritage.
