Vietnamese rescuers save injured crew member from Liberian vessel
Vietnamese maritime authorities successfully rescued a crew member from the Liberian-flagged vessel MSC HERMES III following a serious mechanical failure and medical emergency at sea.
On the evening of September 28, the MSC HERMES III experienced a seawater suction system failure in its engine room while traveling from Hong Kong to Jakarta. The incident left the vessel unable to maneuver, causing it to drift approximately 66 nautical miles northeast of Vung Tau. During towing operations by the Maltese vessel Boka Guard, a Pakistani crew member, Danish Khan, suffered a severe head injury after a fall and reportedly inhaled toxic gases, leading to unconsciousness.
The Ho Chi Minh City Border Guard and the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center Region III deployed the SAR 272 vessel along with medical personnel to assist. After departing late on September 28, the rescue team reached the vessel in the early hours of September 29. The injured crew member was stabilized and transported to shore, where he was handed over to medical authorities for further treatment.
