Vietnamese Woman's Refusal to Lend Family Money Averts Financial Disaster

A woman identified only as H. in Vietnam declined her husband's brother’s request to borrow nearly one billion Vietnamese dong for a business venture. Despite pressure from her husband and in‑laws, she asked the family to review the project’s cash flow, guarantees and repayment risk, and ultimately chose not to lend the money.

Months later the venture collapsed; the organizer vanished and investors lost billions. Because H. and her husband had not provided the loan, their own savings—accumulated over more than ten years for a new home—remained intact, and the family avoided a potentially ruinous dispute.
