Party General Secretary and State President To Lam opened the 33rd Diplomatic Conference in Hanoi on 1 August 2026. The event, held under the theme “Promoting the pioneering role and fulfilling the crucial and regular tasks of Vietnam’s external affairs in the new era”, gathered more than 500 delegates, including 103 ambassadors and heads of missions from 90 countries.

Lam urged the diplomatic sector to play a pioneering role, strengthen strategic research, provide sound policy advice and take timely action to safeguard national interests. He outlined six priority areas: science‑and‑technology diplomacy, tighter coordination among the ministries of Defence, Public Security and Foreign Affairs, leveraging overseas Vietnamese communities, and focusing on emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, the digital economy, green transition, cybersecurity and data security.

The conference highlighted Vietnam’s growing international standing – re‑election to the UN Human Rights Council for 2026‑2028 with the highest Asia‑Pacific vote count, 17 free‑trade agreements with more than 60 partners, and an import‑export turnover of roughly US$930 billion in 2025. Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung chaired the opening ceremony and stressed the need for coordinated action across ministries to support development.
