Vietnam's car market sees sedan sales plunge as SUVs surge

In June 2026 Vietnam sold 34,850 internal‑combustion cars, but only 2,537 were sedans, representing about 7.3% of total volume. Honda City led the segment with 912 units, followed by Mazda2 (471), Toyota Vios (436), Hyundai Accent (201) and Mazda3 (190). The data show a sharp contraction of the sedan market as consumer preference shifts toward higher‑ride‑height vehicles.

Manufacturers are responding by concentrating on SUVs, crossover MPVs and pickups, which accounted for the majority of the more than 20 new models launched in the first half of 2026. Popular additions include the KIA Sportage, Peugeot 3008 and 5008, Ford Everest, Geely Coolray, Volvo XC90, Lynk & Co 900, Mazda CX‑90 and Audi Q5. Conversely, several sedan models have been withdrawn or reduced, such as the Honda Accord, Mazda6, Toyota Corolla Altis and KIA K3, leaving only a limited range of B‑ and C‑segment sedans.

The shift has pushed sedan sales to a five‑year low, prompting dealers to allocate resources to the growing high‑ground vehicle segment while the remaining sedan models rely on brand loyalty and cost‑effective ownership to sustain modest sales.
