Vietnam's Dong Thap gold shop closure underscores call for tighter gemstone regulation

The Hồng Phúc gold shop in Mỹ Tho, Đồng Tháp province abruptly halted operations on 16 July, announcing a temporary suspension until 19 September to restructure and improve service quality. Local market authorities said they continue regular inspections of gold retailers, focusing on product origin and labeling, and have deployed security forces to maintain order as customers flocked to other nearby shops, often waiting on sidewalks for service.

Separately, Vietnamese experts have urged that the diamond market be regulated similarly to gold. They highlight gaps such as absent industry standards, limited price transparency, and insufficient traceability, which place most risk on buyers. Proposals include establishing unified testing, certification, and a centralized trading platform to ensure consistent oversight and reduce information asymmetry.
