Vietnam overhauls durian planting‑area codes to boost $1 bn exports to China
Durian has become a billion‑dollar export for Vietnam, with the first half of 2026 seeing shipments worth about $1.1 billion, a 31.6% increase year‑on‑year, and exports to China reaching $988 million, up 43.1%. The rapid growth exposed problems in the management of planting‑area codes (MSVT) and packing‑facility codes, including overlapping codes that affect 62 households covering 52 ha in Đắk Lắk province.
The government responded with Resolution 36/2026/NQ‑CP, a reform that simplifies and digitises the procedures for issuing these codes, shifting from a pre‑check to a post‑check model. Deputy Minister Nguyễn Hoàng Hiệp said the changes will benefit all participants in the value chain. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a nationwide online conference on 4 August 2026 to launch the resolution.
Officials explained that importing markets use two different mechanisms to recognise Vietnam’s planting‑area codes: major markets such as China, the United States and Malaysia require direct approval by the importing country, while the EU, Japan, Australia and others accept Vietnam’s list and conduct post‑entry checks. The reform aims to remove the bottleneck that has slowed export shipments, especially during peak durian seasons.
