Vietnam's evolving experience with the FIFA World Cup

The history of the FIFA World Cup in Vietnam has evolved from early black-and-white television broadcasts to the modern digital era. For many Vietnamese, the tournament is a significant cultural event that has transitioned from communal viewing of 14-inch televisions to high-definition streaming on multiple digital platforms.

Technological milestones in football broadcasting reached Vietnam in 1982 when the Hoa Sen satellite station and Hoa Sen Station in Ho Chi Minh City successfully connected international signals to domestic television. This allowed for the first live broadcasts of football matches in the country.

Globally, the World Cup has seen significant changes, including the introduction of yellow and red cards in 1970 and the implementation of VAR technology. In Vietnam, the experience has shifted from the era of CRT monitors to a multi-million dollar rights era characterized by sharp imagery and diverse digital access.
