Vietnam's high‑tech exports and e‑commerce brands boost trade growth
Vietnam's export value for the first five months of 2026 reached $215.6 billion, a 19.5 % year‑on‑year increase, adding more than $35 billion. Three high‑tech product groups – electronics ($56.1 billion, up 46.2 %), machinery ($27 billion, up 22.1 %) and phones ($26.3 billion, up 17.7 %) – together accounted for over $109 billion, more than half of total exports. Other sectors also posted strong gains, such as fertilizers (up 100 %), plastics (up 52 %) and animal feed (up 61 %).
At the same time, revenue on Vietnam’s four largest e‑commerce platforms grew nearly 35 % in 2025 compared with the previous year, underscoring the rapid digitalisation of trade. Local producers and cooperatives are increasingly turning to online sales; an example from Lạng Sơn shows a farmer who secured 150 orders after a month of live streaming on TikTok. Government officials stress the need to simplify procedures, establish product traceability and build digital brand identities to help regional goods reach national and overseas consumers.
Both the surge in high‑tech exports and the expansion of e‑commerce reflect Vietnam’s broader shift toward higher‑value trade and a more connected digital economy.
