Vietnam's My Son Temple Inscriptions Move Toward UNESCO Memory of the World Listing
The My Son sanctuary near Da Nang, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is preparing a scientific dossier to nominate its stone epigraphic archive for the UNESCO Memory of the World Register for Asia‑Pacific. Researchers have catalogued roughly 50 inscriptions – complete stelae and numerous fragments – that document the political, religious and cultural history of the ancient Champa kingdom. The My Son World Heritage Management Board has finished the first phase of inventory, technical description and database creation, and will continue with digitalisation and translation of the texts to support the candidature.
Nguyen Van Tho, head of the Office of Conservation and Museums, called the completed inventory a decisive step toward the documentary‑heritage nomination, which is intended to complement My Son’s existing World Heritage status and provide new avenues for conservation and cultural promotion.
The effort is part of Vietnam’s broader strategy to leverage its heritage for soft‑power, cultural diplomacy and economic development, aligning with recent policy resolutions that stress the use of culture and digital innovation as growth engines.
