Vietnam's National Assembly pushes deeper defence cooperation with US firms

During the first extraordinary session of the 16th National Assembly, Vietnam’s leaders focused on expanding foreign‑policy initiatives and strengthening defence ties. Party General Secretary and State President To Lam, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man highlighted the need to protect overseas workers, approve the creation of Quang Ninh and Bac Ninh cities, and adopt legal reforms to encourage innovation and protect public‑interest officials.

US defence and security companies expressed readiness to deepen collaboration. Patrick Sweeney, founder and CEO of an American firm, said US businesses are eager to work closely with Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security to support the country’s development goals and the broader US‑Vietnam strategic partnership. The session also noted upcoming high‑level visits, including a Thai parliamentary delegation and increased political‑theory cooperation with Laos, underscoring Vietnam’s commitment to ASEAN solidarity and regional engagement.
