Vietnam's Nguyễn Thị Lệ ends 58‑year wait as soldier Huỳnh Văn Quên’s remains are identified

Vietnamese widow Nguyễn Thị Lệ spent nearly six decades waiting for the return of her wartime lover, soldier Huỳnh Văn Quên, who promised, “Anh đánh thắng trận này, anh sẽ về cưới em.” The promise was made shortly before Quên went to fight in the 1968 Tet Offensive. In 2025, officials announced that Quên’s skeletal remains had finally been recovered, confirming the long‑sought closure for Lệ, now in her late seventies.

Lệ, who served as a civilian support worker during the war, kept the promise alive through letters and daily hope, refusing marriage proposals and remaining a daughter‑in‑law to Quên’s family. The discovery brings emotional resolution to a story that has symbolised devotion and the lingering scars of Vietnam’s conflict.
