Vietnam's Pioneering Emergency Medicine Expert Vũ Văn Đính Dies at 94

Professor Vũ Văn Đính, a leading figure in Vietnam's emergency medicine and toxicology, died on 29 July 2024 at the age of 94. He previously served as chairman of the Vietnam Society of Emergency and Toxicology and headed the Emergency Department A9 at Bạch Mai Hospital in Hanoi.

During his career he helped build the modern emergency‑care system in Vietnam, introducing advanced techniques such as electric shock therapy, pacemaker implantation, artificial ventilation, peritoneal dialysis and continuous hemofiltration. He also pioneered a three‑department model—Outpatient, Emergency, and Intensive Care—that has been adopted nationwide. In the 1980s he bred venomous snakes to develop antivenom, a breakthrough that improved treatment of snake‑bite poisoning across the country.
