Vietnam's sandwich generation faces rising financial pressures

A survey by Manulife titled ‘Asia Care 2026’ highlights the financial pressures facing the ‘sandwich generation’ in Vietnam. Among adults aged 35-44, 72% are currently providing financial support to their families. This demographic faces significant challenges, with 74% stating that family financial responsibilities hinder their long-term financial autonomy, and 70% expressing concern regarding their ability to afford care in old age.

To mitigate these pressures, many Vietnamese adults are prioritizing self-reliance. Approximately 81% intend to rely on personal savings for retirement, while 48% look toward insurance and 43% toward investment solutions. Only 21% expect to receive financial support from their children.

In a related context of managing family expenses, the back-to-school season presents additional financial hurdles for parents, including tuition, equipment, and living costs. Financial institutions like Vietbank are offering tools such as credit cards to help families manage these sudden, large expenditures without depleting their emergency savings.
