Vietnam's VNeID app adds QR scan to verify ID card validity
The latest update of Vietnam's electronic identity application VNeID (version 2.2.8) introduces a new feature that allows citizens to scan the QR code printed on their national ID card and instantly see whether the document is still valid. Previously, QR scans only displayed static personal data such as name, birth date and address. The new verification step removes the need for manual checks by authorities or separate tools.
The functionality is aimed at streamlining everyday procedures – from registering residence and renewing documents to opening bank accounts or conducting high‑value financial transactions. By confirming card validity on‑the‑spot, users can avoid delays caused by expired or damaged IDs.
Security experts accompanying the rollout stress that users should not photograph or share images of their ID cards on social media or with untrusted third parties, warning that cyber‑crime remains a threat. The guidance advises limiting the provision of ID images to only mandatory requests from reputable institutions.
