Vietnam Sets Aug 20 Deadline for VNeID SIM Check and ID Card Updates

Vietnamese authorities have ordered all mobile subscribers to verify their registration data through the VNeID app by 20 August 2026. Around 13 million SIM numbers that fail to complete the data‑standardisation will be permanently revoked, with two‑way service already blocked for non‑compliant numbers after 15 August. The campaign targets illegal SIM sales and aims to reduce spam and fraud. Verification points and mobile teams are being deployed nationwide, with special assistance for the elderly and those without smartphones.

At the same time, a set of legal amendments effective from July 2026 expands the role of the electronic national identity (căn cước) and VNeID. The new rules forbid officials from demanding paper copies when the data are already integrated in VNeID, and they allow citizens to apply for card renewal or replacement online via the public‑service portal. Penalties for misuse of identity documents have been increased, with Hanoi imposing fines up to 6 million VND for certain violations. Citizens born in 2012, 2001, 1986 or 1966 are urged to check their ID card status on VNeID to ensure timely renewal at ages 14, 25, 40 and 60; failure may attract fines of 500 000–1 000 000 VND and could disrupt banking or other online services.
